Today we are going old school.
Olddddd school.
Like the 80′s.
Back when my kids think pictures were taken in black and white.
Back when Kirk Cameron was the hottie of all hotties.
Back with I crimped my hair and used a banana clip.
Back when teen angst dramas were at their finest.
Ahh, the good old days.
Today we are pitting two of the most famous 80′s movies studs against each other.
It’s important work we do here on That’s What WE Said. Important indeed.
Jake Ryan vs Lloyd Dobler
We’re not going to worry about who the actors are in real life.
Today we are judging them strictly on the characters they were in the movies.
Seems silly? Bite your tongue.
Ok, first up we will go with Jake Ryan. Sixteen Candles was the movie and the year was 1984.
It was a movie that introduced us to Molly Ringwald as well as Long Duck Dong. Two very iconic 80′s idols.
BUT, the highlight of the movie was certainly the dreamy Jake Ryan.
He was the Big Man on Campus, but he also had a heart.
Plus, he wore flannel and sweater vests, like nobody’s business…
Also Jake Ryan drove a Porsche, which definitely gives him the car-edge…Lloyd drives a busted up old Chevy Malibu…
Lloyd Dobler was the boyfriend that every girl dreams of. The movie Say Anything is iconic, even if only for the shot of Dear Lloyd holding up the boombox blasting “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel.
He certainly didn’t have Jake beat in the wardrobe department, with that long trench coat and sweatpants with high-tops.
When he attempted the clean cut look for dinner to meet Diane’s dad he cleaned up nice, though…
Jake Ryan was a man of few words, letting his face speak for itself.
Lloyd had a harder time with the words, and was addicted to kickboxing…hellloooo the “sport of the future”.
While Jake is easy on the eyes, he doesn’t ever have to get over anything in the movie…all he has to do is choose Samantha after his girlfriend gets super drunk…
Lloyd definitely gets perseverance points…I mean he poured his heart out to her in a letter and she gave him a pen in return.
But both movies ended happy, which I am kind of all about…
I wonder which couple would still be together today?
I’m going for Jake and Samantha.
So whose your dude?
Lloyd or Jake?
It’s a tough one.

OMG, LLOYD! (Full disclosure: I married a Lloyd, in small part, because of Lloyd Dobler, lol)
This is such a hard choice! I recently rewatched 16 Candles though & Jake is a smoking’ hottie so I have to go with him I think.
Lloyd- he’s the underdog you just can’t help but root for!
Jake Ryan hands down! =0)
Sixteen Candles is my number one, all-time favorite movie and I have had a crush on Jake Ryan since the first time I saw that movie. He is dreamy. The last scene of the movie over the birthday cake still gives me Jello Knees. However, Lloyd Dobler has a sexiness that sneaks up on you – it’s doesn’t quite slap you in the face like Jake Ryan. Plus John Cusack has a voice that I believe could melt butter. But – at the end of the day I still have to vote for Jake. I mean….he’s JAKE RYAN! Hellooo!
Llyod Dobbler all the way.
Jake Ryan all the way baby.
Jake Ryan without a doubt! But if I was picking from the 80′s movies it would have to be Judd Nelson as John Bender in The Breakfast Club.
Oh Jake Ryan. My friend and I used to watch Sixteen Candles alllll the time. He is still dreamy.
Jake! 16 Candles was amazing!
No question, Jake Ryan, my first movie crush. Oh how I loved (still love) him. I hope Jake and Samantha are living happily ever after!
Additionally, Jake Ryan continued to steal my heart as Al Carver in “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” another great movie I could watch over and over!
Jake Ryan!
Jake Ryan!! Wonder if he has aged “graciously”…
Lloyd Dobler!!!!! Seriously- John Cusack could probably still play him, too- the man ages well! I had a huge crush on him when I was younger….. I should also point out that I just looked him up on IMDB and it turns out my husband is 29 days younger than him, so hey- it could have been…
Lloyd Dobler!! No question.
Jake Ryan hands down!
Jake is like, totally, way hotter (DID I GIVE YOU A FLASHBACK?), but let the Dork win!! Lloyd Dobler is the man!
I’m going to have to go with Jake on this one.
Jake Ryan!!
I totally still have a crush on Jake Ryan, but “in your eyes” with the boom box by Lloyd makes this a tough decision…
ahhh Iam going to have to go with….
Jake Ryan because I am toally superfical.
I’m going to agree with namada and say John Bender – Sigh. Judd Nelson circa 1984. Now if only he hadn’t gotten creepy and weird when he grew up.
anyway. rules. Jake Ryan vs. Lloyd Dobler:
Jake Ryan. Definitely. Partly because he’s WAY prettier, but also largely because of the “he’s a popular senior and she’s an invisible sophomore and he NOTICES her” factor.
I’m wondering who won in the battle of the Josh’s last week?
Jake!!
Lloyd Dobler, all the way. When I was in college I had a cat named Lloyd Dobler. I wanted so badly to teach him how to retrieve a pen every time I told him I loved him, but he wasn’t the smartest cat in the world. He ran away. Most likely to find his own Diane Court!
Jake. for. sure.
I should own a shirt that says I Heart Jake Ryan… nough said….
ah, jake ryan! my first movie crush. could he be any hotter in his tight rolled jeans? i still remember begging my brother to teach me how to tight roll. anyway-jake ryan! 16 candles is still a fave!
Jake, of course!! Did anyone notice that John Cusack, who played Lloyd Dobler, was one of the nerds who hung out with Farmer Ted in 16 candles?
Jake most certainly.
It’s not even a contest…Jake Ryan.
Oh my goodness how could anyone NOT vote for Lloyd Dobler?! He’s the one who taught me what true love was supposed to be like – all angst-y and sensitive and whatnot. Love him!!!
Jake…oh, jake
Jake Ryan!!!! mmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!! I love how he’s not too cool to befriend Anthony Michael Hall. (Farmer Ted lol)
Omg Jake! All the way Jake! Not only was he all manly kinds of fabulous, but…..he gave her a cake! With candles! And told her to make a wish!! Do our husbands know that this is why we are never satisfied with our birthday experiences? It explains so much angst really….
