Gone Girl was the first book on my June reading list, and I had been eagerly anticipating it’s download to my Nook for a few weeks.
It didn’t disappoint.
Let me start by saying that if you like mystery/can’t put down/huge twist books, then you will love this. It is by no means a literary masterpiece, but it’s suspenseful, fun, and one of the most addicting books I’ve read in awhile. Really great for a long plane ride, car ride, or day on the beach.
The story:
On Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing. In the house are signs of a struggle, and Amy’s diary provides plenty of details about Nick that would make anyone point the finger at him. But is Nick as bad as he seems, or is there more going on?
About a two thirds of the way in, this book takes on an entirely new direction. Parts of it were a bit far fetched, but not so much that it put me off.
I definitely recommend adding this to your Summer reading list!!
Did you read it yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

When you first mentioned the book I put my name on the queue at the library…. still on the queue. Number 234. sigh. I’ll let you know what I think in the year 2015. haha!
I hated this book. HATED IT! However, I am only one of 25 people in the United States who felt that way so pay no attention to me. Really. Janet Maslin (New York Times) liked it — I think. (I read her review and I’m still not sure how she felt about it.) The main characters went from bad to despicable to absurd and the twists and turns became soooo far fetched I would have thrown my book across the room in frustration but I’d down-loaded it to my laptop and I’d be even more upset if I had to buy a new one. (Do you know what Tretorns are? Have you heard of Bettie Page? I was wondering if younger readers know some of the references?)
I actually didn’t like it either! I read the first 75 pages was bored and skipped to the third section of the book. Then after reading the ending I went back to the middle. It seemed way too far fetched and the characters just seemed pure evil, especially Amy. She was certifiably crazy!
I was super excited to read it but was sadly disappointed. I am surprised that this is on the Amazon top 10 list!
Loved this book. Great twists, kept me interested. But the end I’m lost what the heck happened?! I stayed up late with just a bit to go and it kinda disappointed So i guess i loved it till the end. Please share your thoughts.
I also loved the twists and turns, and could not put it down, but was so disappointed in the ending.
Wow even the reader comments are conflicted about this book. I am not sure if I should rush out and get it or wait it out. I do love a good suspense read so I think I will definitely consider getting this one. Books are wonderful because there is something for everyone!
Personally I liked the book very much. I hate books that can be figured out early on. Also neither of the main characters were all that likeable, which happens to be quite “true to life,” as far as I am concerned. Personally I am weary of every female in this world wishing to emulate weak characters/heroines in literature or other forms of entertainment. Give me a woman that acts fiercely and independently any day over a Bella Swan and/or the Virginal College Girl that is supposedly from this century.
I read it because you were reading it:) I loved loved it but the ending I was NOT expecting. Really. Completely threw me for a loop. It left me uneasy but at the same time, after a couple of minutes I liked that it wasn’t a ‘Hollywood’ ending. I can not WAIT to see what you read next.
I liked the book except the end! What a horrible end.
OMG~ I am so into this book. I have about 100 pages left. It’s one of those books if I read before bed home alone, I get spooked out. You should give Sharp Objects and Dark Places a try too by Gillian Flynn. I love the way she writes.
Loved this book except for the end! Definitely wasn’t a hollywood ending but I have to admit that it kinda fit in with all of the twists and turns of the novel. It reminded me of the theme of the Survivor TV show … outwit, outplay, outlast!
Oh, and I also heard that Reese Witherspoon’s production company is making it into a movie!
Thank you for recommending this book. It took me two months of waiting in the library queue for it, but only two days to read it. I loved the psychological games the story played with my mind as I read it. I constantly second guessed the next steps each character would take and never say the end coming. I did, however, not like the ending. I don’t need everything wrapped up in a bow- but- waaa? I hope if it is true and the book becomes a movie, they will do the story justice with an ending that makes more sense.
I finished this a few days ago. I thought it was very interesting how the story was told from both perspectives. Super addicting, but the end? Not what I expected and I wasn’t in love with it. Almost felt like there should be a few more chapters.
I would be interested to know how people thought it should have ended. I thought the ending was well done…doesn’t it leave you wondering what happens to them? I love a book that is unpredictable, and this book certainly delivered on that account.
Loved how it made me want to keep reading, and the surprise twist in the middle. I thought there was WAY too much language. And I’m really glad I’m not married to a psycho. This book turned out to be just ok for me.
The first 3rd of the book was painful to get through. The writing felt so pretentious. Then, of course, I saw that I’d been set up for a surprise. Or, rather, a series of surprises. And then I just had to know what happened next and next and next. Let me say, I’m conflicted about whether or not I actually “liked” the book, mostly because I found it hard to suspend disbelief around the lack of resolution of some pretty major stuff. Obviously, that wasn’t enough to make me put it down and I do like talking about it with people. Kind of like debriefing. The character of Amy reminded me a lot of the amazing Bridget from the film “The Last Seduction.” Maybe you should all just rent that!
