Skin Care 101

Skin Care Favorites | That's What We Said

Hey girls!

Clearly Kristan and I both love make up.

We’re junkies.

But I’ll have you know that I am a little obsessed with skin care products as well.

Maybe even more so…

I have to say that I have not always been the best about removing my makeup before bed, or wearing sunscreen, but once I hit 30, I knew things had to change.  Those tiny little lines start forming around your eyes, then on your forehead…then around your mouth…

So of course, the best thing to do is START EARLY.

But even for those of us who didn’t, there’s still hope for you!

I mean, those lines aren’t going anywhere…I mean unless you Botox it up…but there are ways to make your skin look the best that it can.

Here are a few of the things I do.

Let’s start with make-up remover.

I use Dermologica.  It’s called Pre-Cleanse.

dermalogica-precleanseYou use it on a dry face to melt your makeup off.  It’s awesome for even heavy duty eye makeup.  Then you add a little water and massage it all over your face to rinse off all the junk.  I’m telling you…Kristan introduced me to this about a year ago and it has a permanent place in my makeup cabinet.

Next you need a good cleanser.

This will obviously vary from person to person based on your skin type.  I have a morning face wash and an nighttime one…I know, I’m high maintenance. You can certainly get by with one!

Also, I am addicted to the foam…I just need it.

I’m using Soap and Glory’s Clarity 3 in 1 Daily Detox in the morning.  Love this.  It smells good, it cleanses well, without being drying and has VERY gentle exfoliating beads.

At night I use Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser.  I’ve blogged about this one before.  I really like’s creamy and slightly foamy.

Also there’s Purity by Philosophy, which I really like.  It says it’s a makeup remover and cleanser all in one.  I still like to use my Dermologica when I have heavier make up on, I feel like it’s easier on my eyelashes…but this is a fantastic everyday cleanser!

As for how to cleanse…Kristan loves her Clarisonic

31xoh4CUmyL._SY450_I keep it old school and use the cheapest washcloths known to man.  It was a trick my Grandma taught me…

Add a little cleanser on a cheap washcloth and you’ll have the cleanest skin!  I buy mine at Walmart and they typically come in a pack of 10 for like $3.

Next exfoliator.

My latest favorite is Timewise Microdermabrsion by Mary Kay.

I use it twice a week and it’s so great!

Now serum.

I use serum twice a day, both morning and night.

My daytime serum is this SkinCeuticals Serum 15 that I have mentioned before.  It’s light, not harsh on my skin, and absorbs instantly.

I also love this other serum from Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum.  This one is great because it evens out hyper pigmentation.  There are tons of Vitamin C serums/lotions at all price points, so even though these that I listed are expensive, there are other great ones on the market!

Night time serum…Again, you might think this is overkill, but it’s what I am using.

I am currently using Clarins Double Serum and really like it.  It’s a little heavy for a serum, in my opinion, so that is why I use it at night, but it makes my skin really soft!  Another great one is Regenerist by Olay!

Now onto moisturizer.  Again, this will vary person to person based on your skin type…I have fairly combination skin that might lean towards dry.

Again, I’ve mentioned this one before, but it’s fantastic.  Aveda Hydrating Lotion.  LOVE. IT.

Right now I am using this lotion under my makeup…Trish McEvoy Multifunctional Beauty Booster Cream.  I like this one because it’s a cream and a primer.

Kristan is loving the Bliss Triple Oxygen and C Energizing Facial Cream for the day and at night she uses Youth As We Know It.  Bliss products are all really great!

Now SPF.  I don’t like SPF…and quite frankly I have the wrinkles to prove it.  But facial SPFs feel gross on my face…I don’t like the smell, the feel…nothing.

I’ve gotten into them a little because my favorite BB creams have the SPF in them, so that’s a way around it…but this product by Peter Thomas Roth….

318sxRc0YVL._SY450_I am obsessed with it.  If you don’t get anything else out of this post, you need to get this.  It’s a powder mineral spf 30.  It goes on like a setting powder.  It’s so perfect.  I keep mine in my purse and it’s perfect for touch ups through the day.  LOVE it.

So there you have it!  My skin care stuff.

Let me know if you have any all-time favorites.  I love trying out new stuff!!

I love beauty products posts! Frankly, I’m obsessed with skin products so I love reading what other people love! :) I just had a few questions… to get your options. Do either one of you girls use facial wipes (when you’re too lazy to wash your face)? What are your favourite? Also, are there any facial moisturizers that have SPF in them that I could apply in the morning before using foundation?

Thx for the great post, guys!

Love the MaryKay Microdermabrasion ! Do you have the second step to that? The repair, I think it’s called? You cleanse, do the microderm and then you dry off your face and put on the second step, then go on with the rest of your creams/potions…I use the MaryKay Timewise Day Cream – which has SPF built in. And there is firming eye cream, also, that is great! And I have tested, but not purchased yet, the newest MaryKay line – it’s called Repair, I think. There is an eye cream that is amazing! My next MK purchase, for sure. I also use their Timewise 3-in-1 cleanser and moisturizer (when my face is dry, which isn’t often). The MK makeup remover works well, too and is non-oily. No, I don’t sell MK. Really, I don’t. My friend the consultant keeps asking me to sell, but I’m not organized or committed enough to be a home/party salesperson. Anyway, thanks for the tips on cleansers/creams to keep our skin looking its best!

I also hate facial sunscreens, but many years ago, I found that the Aveeno SPF 45 (which has now become SPF 55) for the body works GREAT on my face. (I’ve tried the Aveeno “face” sunscreen and I HATED it!) I NEVER leave the house without using it. It doesn’t smell too “sunscreeny” and it absorbs quickly. I also have combo skin, and although it can be dry in the morning, it’ll quickly get oily if I’m not careful! This stuff never makes my skin oily. Also, I don’t wear foundation every day, so I like knowing my skin is protected, even without SPF in my makeup.

I love my skin and the reason behind is old homemade recipes from my mother’s kitchen. As a teen, i used to find it irritating when my mom use to apply a face mask or some hair pack made of homemade ingredients, thinking how can a turmeric which is used for cooking can be good for my skin…or how can milk or cream or a grass growing in my garden is good for my skin. But my mom use to force me to apply it. She use to make all kinds of face packs, creams and moisturizers for my skin and conditioners for my hair. It was her passion and i got benefit of that. And today when i see myself i realize that i was so wrong. It’s because of my mom i have this healthy skin. Her small tips have given me reason to flaunt my skin. I look much younger then my age. So to thank my mom, i created an article and put all my mom’s recipes in it. Hope you like it. Here is the link

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit
more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental
and all. However just imagine if you added some great photos
or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but
with pics and video clips, this blog could undeniably be one of
the greatest in its niche. Excellent blog!
